Oxford Tri News - 1st December 2017

Friday 1st December 2017

Age Group Evening – Headington Pool – Blenheim Volunteer Free entries – Christmas BaRTT and Social – 2018 Membership Open for New Members - Sunday Rides

Great to see so many club members racing at Eynsham 10k last week with some excellent results – notably Dan Anderton 18th overall and Jenny Ekelund 20th female home. Also great to see “Oxford Tri” appearing under the “club category” for the first time in an open running event (as a result of our recent affiliation to England Athletics)!

Age Group Evening

Thank you to the panel and everyone that came along last night to find out a bit more about age group racing. Some great advice coming from the panel and in particular a very motivational endorsement from Andrew Thorndyke on his own age group experiences. Space does not allow a full recap of the evening but enough to say talk to your coaches or captains if you think that racing for team GBR internationally at any distance might be for you next year or beyond. And take a look at the British Triathlon website for all the technical details on championship events, distances and qualification races and procedure. https://www.britishtriathlon.org/gb-teams/age-group

Headington Pool

Anecdotal evidence would suggest that reduced numbers at Headington resulted in fewer breathing issues so we intend to stay with reduced numbers for the time being. Do let your coaches know if you have noticed any difference or not so that we can continue to monitor and to establish if reduced numbers actually makes a difference or not.

Blenheim Volunteer free race entries

We have now randomly drawn five names from all this year’s Blenheim Tri volunteers and the free entries for Blenheim 2018 are going to Clare Hewitt, Paul Marsh, Katherine Clarke, Paul Whitford and Jon Dodd. As entry to Blenheim is now at £125 this is a valuable prize! So thank you again to all 2017’s volunteers – in addition to the free entries you helped raise £650 for the club.

Christmas BaRTT

A reminder that a fortnight tomorrow will be our Christmas BaRTT. Entries will open a week on Saturday but as normal this will follow the format of our regular Bike and Run Time Trial but with a liberal sprinkling of festive fun – HO HO HO! Everyone will follow our shorter course of 1 mile run, 7 mile bike and 2 mile run. As this is a charity event we will be asking for a £5 entry fee which will go to our hosts and friends at Oxsrad to help with their great work (www.oxsrad.org). Maite has organised a buffet lunch at the Victoria Arms in Old Marston for afterwards. The club will subsidise this but we would ask for a £5 contribution. Maite has been assured by the pub that food portions will be VERY generous! Everyone is welcome but please sign-up so we know numbers in advance.

2018 Membership open for New Members

We have now opened 2018 membership to new members. Membership is effective immediately so if you know anyone that is interested in joining the club now is a great time to let them know as they will get 13 months for the price of 12 (in fact 14 months as January 2019 is also included).

We ask that existing members don’t try to renew yet as we don’t have 2018 membership cards in place for a few more weeks.

We have held membership at £90 for 2018 despite some significant extra costs, particularly pool costs. Ben will elaborate on our financial position (healthy I’m led to believe) at the AGM in January but suffice it to say it’s the extra income generated when we all volunteer at events like Blenheim, Pre Blenheim Swims, our own Triathlon and Duathlon etc that allow us to continue subsidising events and keep membership so low (not forgetting of course the fantastic contribution from our coaches).

Sunday Rides

This Sunday Dana will be leading a fast ride (26kph/16mph +). Distance and route tba. Look out on Facebook for details of other rides.

Rides depart from Oxsrad at 9.15 as normal. Weather is looking dry (though wet roads probably) and comfortably above freezing.

Have a great week!
