Oxford Tri News - 5th January 2018
Welcome back to everyone in 2018 and Happy New Year! With almost a full week of sessions already completed its great to see everyone back on it already! And welcome to all the new members already signed up – with 22 at a cold track last night it was great to have some new members amongst the group. If you have just joined and aren’t sure which session to start with, my advice would be just dive in – they’re all excellent and all are structured to be inclusive for all levels and speeds. Perhaps just turn-up a few minutes early and ask anyone to point out the session coach or leader and let them know it’s your first session. You won’t look back!
AGM and Committee Nominations
As existing members should now be aware after Rob Parle’s email, the AGM and Committee elections are confirmed for January 23rd (Tuesday) at 7.15 (for beer and pizza) and official business at 7.45. All members are welcome and as our main democratic event of the year we encourage members to attend. As your committee, we aim to run the club in a way that reflects the majority of members’ requirements and expectations. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss on the evening but if there is anything specific you would like to raise please email Rob or myself in advance – info [at] oxfordtri [dot] co [dot] uk.
And while some committee members are re-standing, some are also standing down so in Rob’s words “Have you ever considered joining the committee? There are multiple roles available, and you just might be perfect for one of them! As a committee member, you will help to run this awesome club and get to decide what it does and how its money is spent. You will be required to (as a minimum) attend the monthly meetings, usually lasting a couple of hours on a weeknight, plus carry out duties as relevant to your role. To find out more about the positions required, take a look at the documents linked here https://oxfordtri.co.uk/history-and-constitution, on the club’s website under “History and Constitution”. If you have any questions or want to know more, contact email@example.com. If you’re ready to nominate yourself, head to the nomination form https://oxfordtri.co.uk/committee-role-nomination-form.”
2018 Membership is now open
A reminder that 2018 membership is now open and Anna is busy sending cards out. Existing members have until the end of January to renew to ensure continuous access to sessions as usual.
And we’d love to see lots of new members to the club in 2018 so if you know anyone that might be interested please do give them a nudge in our direction – membership is at its best value right now with 13 months of sessions ahead!
This is traditionally the busiest time of year for our training sessions so just an early reminder to all members, if you’re booked for a session but can’t make it for whatever reason please be sure to cancel your spot as soon as possible so that someone else on the waiting list can use it. We LOVE seeing our sessions full up and HATE seeing empty slots go to waste when there is a waiting list! When you cancel your spot the next person on the waiting list will automatically be emailed to say they’ve been promoted. If you are promoted but can no longer make the session please cancel your spot as quickly as possible so the place can be passed on again. Thank you!
Sunday Rides – 10 am delayed start
This Sunday it looks like there will be Intermediate 1 (15 – 16mph target speed) and possibly Intermediate 2 (14 – 15 mph). Rob Davies has an Int 1 70k route to the Chilterns and home via Wallingford with a cheeky Howe Hill Chiltern Climb to get things going for 2018! Note the delayed 10 am start time as frost is likely earlier.
Int 1 details here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/oxfordtri/permalink/1342404959197875/
Look out on FB for anymore weather updates or other rides. There will be a strongish wind from the NE and with temperatures already not much above zero be sure to dress appropriately for the conditions. Always be prepared for extended stops, rain, mechanicals etc – I know it’s stating the obvious but you will get cold VERY quickly if you’re not moving or you get wet. As ever, neither the club nor your ride leader are responsible for advising if conditions are safe for riding or not. You must make this decision yourself and prepare yourself and your bike accordingly.
While on Club Rides I’m happy to announce that Dana will be looking after ride leader schedules in 2018. We have a great team of ride leaders who volunteer to lead out our Sunday rides but we’d love to have a larger group of leaders to spread the load. Expect to hear more from Dana soon – but if you are a reasonably confident rider (of any speed) and know one or two local routes or are happy to follow routes on a Garmin (of any distance) then Dana would love to hear from you. Ideally we would suggest that leaders take out a ride once every two months but more or less often is equally welcome.
Have a great week and welcome back to training!
